Is your dog your always-Valentine? Us too. Dogs make the best Valentine’s day dates because they’re always happy to see you and the never, ever forget to make dinner reservations. With February 14th just around the corner, what are you getting for the most special canine in your life? If you think the best gifts are homemade, consider showing your love with one of these three easy-to-make dog treat recipes you can whip up tonight.

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Snaps

Your dog should be eating more pumpkin, and what pooch doesn’t love peanut butter?

  • 2.5 c. whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • ½ c. canned pumpkin
  • 2 Tbsp. creamy peanut butter

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, adding water as needed until the mixture just comes together as a dry, stiff dough. Dump the dough onto a smooth surface, then use a wine bottle or soda can to roll it to about ½” thickness. Use a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass to cut out shapes, then bake on a parchment-paper lined cookie sheet for around 30-40 minutes, or until hard. Cool before serving!

Grain-Free Vegan Treats

If your dog’s dietary needs are specific, these yummy morsels won’t let her down.

  • ½ c. rice flour, or any other grain-free flour
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cooked then cooled
  • ½ c. coconut oil (actually the consistency of peanut butter)
  • 1 ripe banana, mashed

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, then add water and/or more rice flour as necessary to get the dough to the consistency of modeling clay. Pull off small chunks then roll into balls; place the balls on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and flatten with your hand. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until your desired level of doneness, then cool before serving.

Meaty Chews

If you’ve got an ageing dog, he’ll love these easy-to-chew dog delicacies.

  • 1 (2.5 oz.) jar of chicken baby food
  • 4 tsp. dry milk powder
  • 4 tsp. dry Cream of Wheat cereal

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together into a bowl. The mixture will be a bit sticky, but you should be able to form it into shapes with your hand. Let the dough sit for about 15 minutes, then pinch off small balls. Flatten the balls with your palm onto a parchment-lined baking sheet until they’re about ½”-¾” thick. Bake for only about 15 minutes, then remove to cool while the cookies are still soft. If you ask us, the best dog treats are the kind that people can eat, too. There’s no better way to show your dog you love her then to feed her nutritious food each and every day…that extends to Valentine’s Day, too!
