Are Small Dogs Better Guard Dogs?

by Gallant Staff

Below, we’ll dive into whether or not small dogs can make good guard dogs as well as some small breeds to take into consideration.

Are You Looking For A Guard Dog Or A Watch Dog?

Before breaking down whether or not small dogs are good guard dogs, it’s important to distinguish between a guard dog and a watchdog. Generally speaking, “guard dogs” are able to physically ward off intruders by way of brute force. Watch dogs may alert you that an intruder is coming, but they may not attack the intruder themselves. That being said, the bark of a watchdog can be enough to deter some intruders from approaching a redience altogether.

The phrases “guard dog” and “watch dog” are sometimes used interchangeably, though it’s important to make this distinction when determining whether a breed would serve as an effective guard dog as discussed below.

Do Small Dogs Make Good Guard Dogs?

Unfortunately, most small dogs simply do not have enough force to fend off an incoming intruder. Therefore, there aren’t necessarily many effective small guard dogs. That being said, small dogs can make amazing watch dogs, even better than larger dogs for the following reasons.

Protective Sensibilities — Just like larger breeds, some small dogs may have a tendency to be more protective of their families and property which can be great for keeping your home safe.

Bark Doesn’t Match The Bite — Some small dogs can have surprisingly loud, boisterous barks that can help ward off introducers before they get too close.
