Unfortunately, these long held misconceptions continue to leave many of these sweet dogs stuck in shelters. Below, we’ll share some of the myths about pit bulls that you should stop believing if you haven’t already. After all, this so-called “bully” breed deserves as much love and care as any other dog.

Pit Bull Characteristics

Before going into some of the unfortunate myths about Pit Bulls, it’s important to understand the breed’s true characteristics. These confident watch dogs want nothing more than to hang out with their families, and are known to be incredibly affectionate.

Pit Bulls are high energy dogs that need owners who can provide them with plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. These smart dogs love to play and learn tricks. They can be a bit stubborn at times and aloof towards other dogs, so they’ll need plenty of positive reinforcement and training early on to get them off on the right paw.

When provided with the right amount of training and exercise, these sweet dogs are sure to cement themselves as one of the best furry family members you can find.

Pit Bull Myths

Here are just a few of the commonly held misconceptions about Pit Bulls. Let’s do some myth busting!

MYTH: Pit Bulls Are Inherently Aggressive

TRUTH: Pit Bulls aren’t inherently aggressive more than any other dog. While genetics may make certain behaviors more likely in a breed, any behavior can be modified through the use of positive, consistent training sessions. Aggression isn’t specific to one breed of dog, and Pit Bulls are no exception to the rule. Provided proper care, these pups are known for being some of the sweetest canine companions you can find.

MYTH: Pit Bulls Have Locking Jaws

TRUTH: There’s no such thing as a locking jaw for any breed, let alone Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls don’t have the strongest “bite”, either. These caring canines love their humans and biting is rarely a concern. Pit Bulls aren’t physiologically different from other dogs in any way.

MYTH: Pit Bulls Are More Dangerous Than Other Dogs

TRUTH: Pit Bulls are not more dangerous than other dogs, and there is no evidence to back this claim. There was a study conducted, however, that determined that there was no significant difference in aggression when Pit Bulls were compared with the darling Golden Retriever.

MYTH: Pit Bulls Aren’t Good Family Dogs

TRUTH: Pit Bulls originally earned the nickname “nanny dogs” for their fondness and tolerance of little ones. These pups have long been popular family pets due to their loyalty, gentleness, and affection. You’ll find that these dogs love spending time around all humans, big or small. Pit Bulls are incredibly patient when provided with proper care making them amazing four-legged friends to welcome into your family unit.

MYTH: Pit Bulls Are Only Good For Single Pet Homes

TRUTH: As with any breed, it can be a challenge to introduce a new dog into your life, especially if you already have a furry friend at home. That being said, anything is possible with proper training, socialization, and care. Pit Bulls can thrive in most environments, so long as their individual needs are taken care of and understood.

Just like any other dog, Pit Bulls come with their own set of considerations and concerns. However, don’t let misconceptions about the breed prevent you from welcoming one of these patient, playful pups into your life. Given proper exercise, socialization, and plenty of cuddles, these dogs make amazing canine companions.
