What Happens During an In-Home Vet Visit?

Surveys reveal dozens of reasons pet owners avoid taking their cats and dogs to the vet, from inconvenience to time constraints to animal anxiety. Our licensed veterinarians bring the vet’s office to your home. Pet parents tell us the experience is less stressful for their pets which in turn makes them more likely to see the vet as often as recommended. Since on-demand at-home vet care is a relatively new concept, we get a lot of questions from pet owners about what to expect. We get it: When you’re used to spending most of your time waiting at the vet, you might not know what in-home care looks like, or whether it makes sense for you. Rest assured, in-home vet visits aren’t just for large animals or end-of-life care (although they’re ideal solutions for those situations, too.) They’re an easier way to ensure your cat or dog is vaccinated, well-checked, and healthy.
Here’s what to expect during a vet appointment at your home.
First, you’ll schedule your vet appointment when it’s for you. When you make your appointment, consider when your pet will be most amenable to a check-up, too. Are they generally most contented in the mornings after breakfast? Or would they do better a little groggy before their afternoon nap? It’s up to you!

When your veterinarian + veterinary technician team arrives, you’ll want your pet to be comfortable; one of the best benefits of at-home veterinarian visits is that they’re on your pet’s home turf, reducing anxiety over seeing the vet. Great places for in-home exams include in your pet’s bed, on the couch, or even on the kitchen floor. Depending on the reason for the visit, your vet will perform the same kinds of tests at home that they would in a vet’s office. They’ll check your pet for any signs of illness, from their eyes to their ears to their paws. Temperature checks, vaccination administration, blood draws…these are all care your pet can receive at home. What can’t a mobile veterinarian do? Generally anything that requires highly-specialized equipment (such as an X-ray) has to be carried out in an animal medical facility. Vetted veterinarians can perform about 90% of the services a veterinary clinic can. Another perk of in-home veterinary care is that you’ll have plenty of time to talk to your vet about any behavioral issues you may be dealing with. Your home is a distraction-free zone to ask questions about diet, aggression, and long-term care. The vet will be sure to discuss with you whether your pet will need any follow-up care.
